Toothbrushing & Children with Sensory Issues - 3 Tips for Better Brushing

If you have a child with sensory issues, you know that toothbrushing can be a challenge. At our Medina, OH office, we practice children’s dentistry that takes the needs of all children into account.

So what’s going on with your child, and how can you help? 

Kids with hypo-sensitivity can feel insecure about what’s happening in their mouths, leading to anxious feelings and an aversion to brushing. On the other hand, hyper-sensitive kids may perceive the oral stimulation of brushing as painful.

This can be frustrating because you want your child to enjoy good oral health. We want to help, so we’re sharing a few tips that might help make your child’s oral hygiene routine less stressful:

Find the right toothbrush.

A toothbrush that’s too large for your child’s little hands just creates more of a problem. Focus on finding a toothbrush that’s a comfortable size for your child. Soft toothbrushes will help reduce any uncomfortable sensations that can occur with stiff bristles.

Brush with your child.

Children follow by example, and your little one may just need to see that brushing teeth is okay. Brush when they brush or take turns brushing so your child can perform the actions and see that it’s not that scary. 

Experiment with different kinds of toothpaste.

You may be surprised at how simply changing to a different flavor toothpaste can help your child get used to brushing. If your child's having difficulty, it may be that he or she perceives a minty flavor as painful or burning. There are more flavors of toothpaste than you can imagine, so try some of them out and see how your child responds.
