There’s nothing more embarrassing than bad breath. One problem is that others often notice it before you do; unfortunately, your first indication might be a co-worker who discreetly backs away from you during a conversation.

Occasional bad breath is common, and we all experience it from time to time. It may be the food you eat, whether or not you smoke, and even stomach acid that's causing the unpleasant odor.

But if bad breath is persistent and doesn’t go away with brushing or mouthwash, the solution may be as easy as improving your oral hygiene routine.

Brush Your Tongue

While you may feel silly brushing your tongue, there’s actually a good reason to do it. Bacteria can accumulate on the back of your tongue and lead to a foul aroma. Brushing carries away the bacteria and leaves your mouth feeling fresh and clean.

Stay Hydrated

Saliva carries away a lot of the bacteria that can cause odors in your mouth. If you have dry mouth because of coffee drinking, smoking, or the medications you take, you are more likely to have bad breath. You can combat this by drinking enough water to rinse away bacteria and keep your mouth hydrated and your breath fresh.

Brush after Meals

If you’re already brushing twice a day and still have bad breath, you may want to start brushing after you eat to remove bacteria-filled plaque and avoid the unpleasant odor. It’s especially important to remember to brush before bedtime.
