There’s an increasing awareness that oral health is closely linked to our overall health and well-being. It’s as much about your quality of life as it is a problem-free smile.
While you may not think of your child’s oral health in terms of their general well-being, kids are affected by dental problems too, which results in more school days missed, and difficulty concentrating. Fortunately, the number of kids visiting the dentist is on the rise, but it’s still essential for you to be proactive about their oral health.
Making Healthy Food Choices
A large part of your child’s oral health is related to their diet. As a parent, you have the power to make food choices for your child that keep them healthy and happy and support their oral health. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Avoid sugary drinks – Certain sugars are good for your child’s health, but you won’t find them in fruit juices. While they sound like a healthy alternative, juices are high in sugars that lead to tooth decay.
Limit snacking – After eating, saliva breaks down as part of digestion, rehydrates the mouth, and restores healthy pH. This action reduces acid in your child’s mouth that leads to tooth decay. But saliva needs time to do its job. When your child snacks throughout the day, you introduce more food and interrupt the cavity-reducing process.
See the dentist regularly – Your child needs routine exams and cleanings just like you do. Routine appointments also give you an opportunity to ask any questions you have about your child’s oral health.
