Many people make the mistake of thinking that excellent brushing habits alone are enough to keep teeth healthy. We understand that flossing takes a few extra minutes out of your busy day, but we can assure you that it is time well spent!

Flossing is Essential!

We stress the importance of flossing because no matter how well you brush, you are only cleaning the surfaces of your teeth. Bacteria often reside in the gaps between your teeth, and if you don’t use floss to clean these spaces, plaque will build up and eventually lead to cavities and gum disease.

Tips for Flossing Like a Pro

Now that you understand why flossing is important, here are a few tips for making sure you get the most out of your efforts:

  • Establish a routine – You only need to floss once a day. Many people choose bedtime so they can go to sleep with a clean mouth. Whenever you plan to floss, establish a routine, and the task will become second nature.
  • Floss both sides of your teeth – Remember that when you get your floss between teeth, you need to work the teeth on both sides. Insert the floss gently, wrap the floss around one tooth and work it, then move to the other tooth and repeat.
  • Switch to a clean length of floss – Repeatedly using the same section of floss just spreads loose plaque to other teeth. Use a fresh length of floss each time you move to another tooth.
