Do you know what the number one childhood disease is? You might guess the common cold or asthma, but you would be wrong!

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, dental caries (cavities) are the number one chronic childhood disease. Fortunately, however, the ADA Health Policy Institute has released statistics indicating that more children than ever are receiving essential dental care. In 2015 only 10% of US children did not have any form of coverage, which is the lowest it has ever been.

Protect Your Child’s Quality of Life

Lack of treatment for kids results in poor oral health that impacts their well-being and their quality of life. Children with chronic dental problems can experience many disruptive problems:

  • Pain and discomfort that result in school days missed
  • Difficulty chewing, which affects growth and development
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Poor self-esteem
  • Speech development problems
  • Higher risk of new decay in other baby teeth

No parent would knowingly choose to put their child at risk for these problems. But kids may have trouble verbalizing what's bothering them, so you may not realize that these symptoms are caused by poor oral health.

Preventive Dental Visits Are Essential

This is why routine dental visits are essential for your child’s health and well-being. If a problem is developing, your dentist can address it immediately, before it leads to discomfort. Preventive treatments like fluoride applications and dental sealants may also be recommended to keep your child’s teeth healthy.
