Dental crowns are a durable and reliable restoration for repairing damaged or decayed teeth. However, they’re not indestructible. When you have dental crowns, practicing good oral hygiene and healthy habits is essential to keep your smile healthy and ensure your crowns last for many years. Some dental crowns can even last for decades with the proper care!

Here are some tips on how to properly care for your crowns.

1. Brush Your Teeth Every Day

Brushing your teeth removes plaque buildup and food debris that lead to tooth decay and other issues. However, it also keeps your restorations healthy and strong. Since your dental crowns are much like natural teeth, you must keep brushing twice daily as you did before! Your Medina dentist can also recommend types of toothpaste or other dental products to use at home.

2. Floss Like a Boss

Flossing is essential for removing food debris from between teeth. We encourage you to floss once a day to remove bacteria and plaque, and be sure to gently go down to the gumline. Flossing also toughens up the gums, reducing the likelihood of bleeding, swelling, and soreness. Plus, cleaning between your teeth with floss each day helps prevent cavities and gum disease!

3. Be Aware of What You Eat

Dental crowns are strong, but certain foods can damage them if you’re not careful. Foods to limit or avoid include ice, hard candies, sticky desserts, nuts, and chewing gum. We also recommend avoiding sugary foods and drinks because you can develop a cavity beneath the dental crown.

4. See Your Dentist for Preventive Checkups

Brushing, flossing, and eating healthy foods are integral to maintaining excellent oral health. However, so is visiting the dentist for regular checkups. These checkups help us monitor your smile’s health, check your restorations, and help prevent or treat early signs of tooth decay, gum disease, and other problems.
