TMJ Treatment in Medina, OH

Jaw pain affects your everyday life. If you don’t have the ability to open your mouth or chew because of pain, it will change the way you live. You won’t be able to eat the foods you want to, and sometimes the pain can be enough that you have to take medication all the time.

Your jaw is very complex, and dealing with the cause of the pain can be complex, as well. The team at Sinick Family Dental will take the time to get to know you and understand the causes of your pain in order to offer a solution.

The Symptoms of TMD

When your jaw joint (TMJ) is not functioning correctly, it results in a painful jaw joint disorder known as temporomandibular disorder, or TMD. Here are some signs you may be suffering from TMD.

Joint Popping

When your jaw joint pops or clicks upon opening or closing your mouth, which could be painful.

Painful Chewing

If you experience pain or tenderness when biting, chewing, and eating it could be due to TMD.

Headaches

TMD causes muscle tension, which could result in frequent painful headaches or migraines.

Tooth Grinding

Clenching or grinding your teeth (bruxism) while you sleep can be due to TMD.

Neck Pain

Frequent and debilitating neck and shoulder pain is often the result of TMJ issues.

Lock Jaw

Your jaw locking in an open or closed position can indicate you suffer from TMD.

The Root Causes of Jaw Pain

There are several different reasons why your jaw would start hurting. The most common reason is that it is the result of some sort of habit. The two most common habits that cause jaw pain are grinding and clenching your teeth.

Many people are not aware that they grind their teeth since it most often happens at night. You may notice some of the following signs that indicate you are grinding your teeth:

  • Your teeth are chipped.
  • Your teeth are shorter than they once were.
  • Your teeth no longer have cusp tips but are flat instead.
  • You wake up with a sore jaw.
  • You notice parts of your tooth missing along the gum line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Every year, thousands of Americans suffer from jaw pain. Symptoms can include tenderness and swelling, pain during eating, constant headaches, and more.

Please call us right away at Sinick Family Dental to schedule an appointment so we can help treat your pain. Dental pain does not typically go away on its own and is often a sign of severe underlying issues.

Why Is My Jaw in Pain?

There are many reasons people can hurt their jaw, including arthritis or sinus issues. We can better understand your condition after a comprehensive examination using digital x-rays and other dental tools.

Some typical oral health issues that can result in jaw pain include:

Teeth grinding

Patients may not be aware that they are grinding their teeth, especially during their sleep. Grinding your teeth creates a lot of stress and pressure and often leads to fractured teeth, sensitive teeth, and misaligned bites.

We can help resolve these using nightguards that keep your teeth from coming into contact.

Periodontal disease

This severe oral health issue can cause receding gums, tooth loss, and loose teeth.

At Sinick Family Dentistry, our root planing and scaling can help treat patients who have advanced periodontal disease.

Temporomandibular joint disorders

TMJ disorders can cause pain to your face, jaw, and neck. Drs. Christopher Sinick and Jessica Sinick can help treat and heal your oral health disorder with different techniques.

Infection

When oral health issues are left untreated, they can become infections, abscesses, and decay. Infections in your mouth should be taken seriously as they can quickly spread to other parts of your body, like your heart.

Tooth pain

Tooth pain is never normal, so don't ignore it and hope for the best! The sooner we can treat your toothache, the better our chances are saving it and preventing significant oral health issues. It's also more comfortable (and cheaper) to treat dental problems as soon as they start and before you need a root canal.

Trauma

Injuries can happen at any time (especially if your active), tripping and falling on your face, sports injuries, car accidents, and more can cause debilitating jaw pain.

Are You Suffering From Jaw Pain?

Call our Medina, OH dental office to schedule an appointment with Dr. Sinick.

Do you wake up in the morning with jaw pain or stiffness? When you open and close your mouth, do you hear clicking or popping sounds? If so, you may be suffering from a temporomandibular joint disorder.

TMJ disorders may be caused by teeth clenching, stress, or nail biting, but fortunately, there are treatment options from your Medina, OH, dentist.

What Does TMJ Pain Feel Like?

Your temporomandibular joints are located in front of your ears on each side of your face. They connect your lower jaw to your skull, allowing you to chew, speak, and yawn.

When your TMJ isn’t functioning properly, it can lead to discomfort and other symptoms.

Some of the most common signs of a TMJ disorder include the following:

  • Painful clicking or popping
  • Grating in the jaw joint when opening or closing the mouth
  • Limited jaw movement

How Do You Treat TMJ Issues?

A woman smiles | TMJ treatment medinaOur first step in treating your TMJ/ jaw pain is to perform a thorough exam and figure out what is causing it. Our doctors always likes to begin with the most conservative treatment first. This often means that we will begin by making a night guard (also called a bite guard or occlusal guard).

There are several different types that we use depending on your unique situation. Some will cover your entire arch and others will only cover your front teeth. Our doctors will determine what type of guard is best for your situation based on your needs. If a guard does not offer complete relief, there are several other steps we can take to treat your jaw pain.

What to Do When Your Jaw Won't Stop Hurting

a woman holds her jaw and looks at her dentist | Medina OH TMJ treatment

Like most parts of your body, you don't appreciate the work your jaw joint does until it isn't working properly. This can result in painful symptoms like toothaches, headaches, clicking or popping sounds when the joint moves, or pain when you open and close your jaw.

Called the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), your jaw joint is a hinge that allows you to move your lower jaw to speak, chew, and express emotion. You can find it by placing your fingers in front of your ears and moving your jaw up and ...
