How A Same-Visit Crown is Created
You’re leaving on your big family vacation in less than a week, and you just broke off a big chunk of a tooth. You know you’re probably going to need a dental crown, but you’re not going to cancel your trip just to sit around and wait for it for two weeks.
If you’ve ever faced a similar situation, you know that it can be frustrating to say the least. So you should know about one of the latest advancements in dentistry and technology – CEREC same-visit crowns.
CEREC stands for Chairside Economic Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, which is a fancy way of saying that dentists can now prepare a fully customized porcelain dental crown while you wait. A process that used to take two weeks or more can be completed in about two hours.
Benefits of Same-Visit Crowns
The process used to create CEREC crowns eliminates all of the uncomfortable and inconvenient aspects of having a traditional lab-fabricated restoration.
- No need for multiple appointments
- No need for messy impressions
- No need for multiple injections
- No need for a temporary crown
- No two-week wait for your crown
The CEREC Process
Your CEREC dentist uses state-of-the-art digital imaging to design your new restoration in the office. A virtual 3-D model is designed, and the specifications are sent to a milling machine that cuts your crown out of a block of tooth-colored porcelain.
During this time, you’re free to sit back and watch TV, check your email, or listen to soothing music while your crown is fabricated. When the crown is ready, it is cemented in place just as a lab-fabricated crown. You’ll leave the office ready to go on with your life and not give another thought to a damaged tooth.
