What You Can Expect during Your Root Canal
When you think about your smile, your first thought is probably its appearance and whether or not it’s living up to your expectations. But a great-looking smile on the outside starts with healthy teeth, and sometimes endodontic treatment (root canal) is part of the picture.
Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the soft inner tissue deep inside your teeth that we call pulp as well as the tissue that surrounds the root of your tooth. If decay or infection makes its way to the pulp, you will feel pain that intensifies over time, and without treatment, you will lose the tooth.
What to Expect During Treatment
Root canals have a bad reputation, which is not the fault of the procedure but the myths that have grown around it. Decades ago, the procedure may have been uncomfortable, but that was then, and this is now, and things have dramatically changed for the better!
- Your dentist’s first step is to make sure your mouth is numb to be sure you don’t feel anything.
- Next, a tiny access hole is made in the back of the tooth so your dentist can reach its interior.
- Your dentist will then gently remove the diseased pulp from this area and clean and disinfect the tooth.
- A material called gutta percha is used to fill the cleaned-out space, and the tooth is sealed with a temporary filling.
Since the root canal procedure weakens the tooth, your dentist will most likely recommend a dental crown to protect it and restore function.
